ALBANY - Three elementary schools in the Dougherty County School System have been named "Literacy Leaders" by the Georgia Department of Education.
Lamar Reese Magnet School of the Arts, Northside Elementary School and West Town Elementary School each showed more than 15% growth on the Georgia Milestones over the previous year.
In total, 84 schools across Georgia were recognized for growth.
The Dougherty County School System has made early literacy one of the pillars of its strategic plan; adding literacy specialists to its team to support schools, launching the Read to Succeed Initiative and having literacy-based events such as the Read Bowl -- a partnership with the Malcolm Mitchell - Share the Magic Foundation.
