ALBANY, Ga. -- The Math Team of Robert A. Cross Middle Magnet School took part in the Albany Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition on Saturday, February 10, 2024. The competition was hosted at Albany State University's West Campus. Mathcounts is a nationwide middle school mathematics tournament that takes place in multiple locations around the United States. The current primary supporters of the organization are Raytheon Technologies and the U.S. Department of Defense STEM. The covered topics are geometry, combinatorics, probability, number theory, and algebra. Robert A. Cross achieved first place in the Team event.
During this tournament, there is a Countdown Round in which the top 8 students go head-to-head in a bracket style until a champion is determined. Out of the eight highest-performing participants, four were students from our institution: Charlie Wang, Arthell Brown, Triumph Olabisi-Ojo, and Demetrios Fordham. The winner of this year's CountDown Round competition was Charli Wang, who is from our school and is in 8th grade. In second place was Demetrios Fordham, also in 8th grade. Tied for third place was Arthell Brown, also in 8th grade.
Our team, consisting of Kevin Hernandez, Triumph Olabisi-Ojo, Charli Wang, and Arthell Brown, will participate in the State Competition on March 11, 2024, in Atlanta, GA. Additionally, Demetrios Fordham, one of our students, will compete individually at the state level. We commend all our contestants, as well as Mr. Gibson, Ms. Batool, and the entire Math Department, for their dedicated efforts in and to this competition. We will return in the upcoming year!
