ALBANY, Ga. -- After battling it out through a number of rounds in their respective divisions, the teams from Robert A. Cross Middle Magnet School and Westover Comprehensive High School emerged as the champions of the 2025 Carter G. Woodson Black History Bowl.

In its third year, the quiz bowl is a district-wide event open to middle and high schools and is held each February during Black History month. The event is designed to help underscore the contributions of African Americans to local, state, national and global history and culture and is organized by the Dougherty County School System's Division of Academic Services.

Each year, the district names an honorary quiz master to kick off the event. This year, Monroe High School Alumnus Rutha Mae Harris, one of the original Freedom Singers, who toured the country during the civil rights movement bringing awareness and raising funding for the movement, was selected.
